According to the manufacturers, they contain notes of cashmere wood. Sounds beautiful and well-smelled, isn’t it? The problem arises when we try to learn something about this specific wood. Does it grow in Kashmir? What species is it? What does it look like? Wikipedia nor certified dendrologists won’t be able to help us because, as it turns out, cashmere wood does not exist in nature! So, what is it doing in the notes of our perfumes? We will answer that a little later.

In perfume’s world, we can find many other, even more fascinating examples of notes such as aluminium, fire, sand, solar notes, or even… pebbles. If at this moment we begin to doubt how someone could capture their scent in a bottle (or if they have any scent at all), we are right to do so.

In reality, it turns out that even from very common objects (most fruits e.g.), extracting their fragrance can be challenging. To obtain fragrance substances from plants, various methods of distillation and extraction are commonly used. These methods have their limitations, and not every plant (or its parts) can yield a fragrance essence that closely resembles the scent of the same plant in a natural environment. Let’s see lily of the valley – when we smell its flowers, we perceive a very specific scent, but we are not able to effectively extract it. Trying to extract substances from lilies of the valley would result in something that bears no resemblance to its scent (and, in fact, smells really unpleasant). The situation is similar with most fruits; except for some exceptions (such as citrus, from which essential oils can be pressed from their peels).

Certainly, now we can think of all the familiar perfumes in which we have sensed distinct, juicy fruits. So there must be a way to capture their scent in perfumes, right? This brings us smoothly to the topic of perfume ingredients.

Perfume ingredients and construction

The range of raw materials available to a perfumer in their workshop can be broadly divided into two categories: natural substances (essential oils, absolutes, macerations, etc.) and so-called aroma molecules. The latter refers to individual chemical compounds (or their mixtures) that possess specific smells.

When it comes to the natural substances, the process is usually straightforward. For example, if a perfumer wants to incorporate a cedar note in the composition, they can use essential oil distilled from cedarwood. But what if the perfumer wants to capture the scent of a pear or a cherry? This is where molecules come into play. With the help of a trained nose, these molecules are combined to create what is known as accords. The result can be a realistic representation of a specific natural ingredient. Depending on their creative vision, a perfumer can also build more imaginative accords to achieve interesting effects. Instead of aiming for the scent of fresh cherries, they might create a cherry liqueur accord or cherry bubble gum melting on a warm, sun-soaked pebble.

Thanks to molecules, perfumers are able to create very creative representations – sometimes even of non-existent objects. Now we can come back to the mystery of the cashmere wood. Under this name, there is a very popular molecule called Cashmeran. It combines the aromas of wood and musk, making it exceptionally versatile and practical in the perfumer’s work. A nose can use it to create an accord with the scent of wood, musk, or their combination. This is reflected in the description of fragrance notes, where Cashmeran is sometimes described as cashmere wood, cashmere, and increasingly, the name of this molecule is directly mentioned.

Notes and ingredients – why all this confusion?

Now that we know that notes and ingredients are not the same, the question arises: why do we use notes instead of ingredients to describe fragrances?

The most important aspect is the practicality of such an approach. Describing a fragrance in the form of notes is much more concise – usually consisting of a few to several notes. The actual list of ingredients in perfumes is much longer and can include dozens to over a hundred raw materials! This is because one molecule almost never equals one note. In order to recreate the scent of one fruit or a flower, a perfumer often has to use dozens of different molecules. In practice, it is often a combination of molecules and natural essential oils, which further complicates the matter. Below we have comparison of the notes and ingredients inside the same perfume:

Clarity of communication is crucial in this regard. When reading notes, everyone should be able to easily imagine the approximate scent, regardless of their knowledge of fragrances. Let’s imagine that instead of listing the note as “musk,” manufacturers provided the names of the ingredients used to create musky accords ( Galaxolide, Exaltolide, Musk-T). These names may be understandable to fragrance enthusiasts with exceptional knowledge. However, the average consumer has likely never heard of such ingredients, let alone had the opportunity to smell them. And if we add ingredients with less “sexy” names, (e.g. (Z)-3-hexenal dimethyl acetal), such a perfume description would not only be incomprehensible but likely off-putting to anyone without an organic chemistry degree.

Another aspect is simply marketing. In the case of perfumes (and fragrance products in general), the description is particularly important because it also shapes the mindset of the consumer. It often directly “directs” their sense of smell towards specific associations. This is especially exploited by manufacturers of mainstream perfumes. These perfumes often rely on a “cocktail” of woody, floral, and fruity accords. It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly what we smell in them. However, when we read the manufacturer’s description of notes, it becomes easier, and our brain automatically associates a floral accord, for example, with roses or jasmine.

Recognize what is really inside the perfume

If we feel somewhat “enchanted” and would like to rely more on the actual composition of the perfume rather than the notes, there are several ways to do it:

Explore perfume ingredients – by familiarizing yourself with the scent of individual raw materials, it will be easier to recognize them when they are used in perfumes. We can get to know the ingredients by participating in perfume workshops – it is the best option because we also receive a substantial amount of knowledge from the tutor. You can also order ingredients from stores that offer perfume substances – there are increasingly more of them now, and they also provide molecules used in professional perfumery.

Pay attention to the notes description – although, as we have seen, notes are usually just representations of used ingredients, many brands specify whether a certain note is an accord (e.g., leather accord) or a natural oil or extract (e.g., jasmine absolute). I do the same – in the descriptions of Bale Perfumes, I list all the natural extracts and, unlike many other producers, I also specify the quantity of them.

Read ingredients on product packaging – the ingredients listed on packaging usually only include a small number of substances that are common allergens, while the actual composition is hidden under the term “parfum”. However, more and more manufacturers, especially those of natural perfumes, are now disclosing the actual essential oils and extracts used in their products in the ingredient list.

If we’re thinking about how to know the complete composition of our favourite perfumes, the usual answer is that it’s not simply possible. Perfume manufacturers consider their fragrance formulas to be their greatest secret and do not disclose them publicly. There are chemical analyses available that can help identify the composition of perfumes. However, due to their high cost and the need for highly skilled interpretation of the results, this option is mostly used by professionals in the industry.

Apple in the top notes, rose in the heart, and musk and leather in the base… When describing perfumes, discussing them, or trying to imagine their scent, notes come to our aid.
